MILWAUKEE — A school bus driver here was recently recognized for her efforts to boost the literacy skills of the students on her bus.
Lurlean Hinton-Hodges, a school bus driver with Lakeside Bus, a member of the Student Transportation of America (STA) family of companies, was awarded the Milwaukee Superintendent’s Award for Excellence in Education during a local school board meeting on Dec. 20.
The award is given to individuals within Milwaukee Public Schools who have demonstrated an initiative to foster growth and learning in students.
Hinton-Hodges has developed a reading program on her school bus that encourages all students to read instead of play on their devices, and to help, she keeps a variety of children’s and educational books on her bus. As a result of her program, her bus has received the fewest student discipline write-ups for the year at the Browning School, according to STA.
